Laxative Tea for the Master Cleanse
« on: June 08, 2006, 02:33:22 AM »
I am hoping to start the Master Cleanse in the next couple of days and wanted to know what others used/recommended for a laxative tea, the book doesnt give any recommendations.  One of my herbal books said that dandelion was a laxative (as well as a diuretic), but I havent seen this in my other two herbal books to support this.  It would work best for me right now, since it is free and available in my chemical free backyard....also would I use the leaves or the root.

I am open to other options as well.   Thank you!

Hey Kay,

Here is a list of laxitive property herbs:

aloe vera
barberry
buckthorn
burdock
cascara sagrada(works a little too fast for me!)
chickweed(don't use if allergic to common weeds such as ragweed)
dandelion(YEAH for free herbs in backyard!)
Golden Seal(has to be the worst herb I have ever tasted :P )
Marshmallow
Safflowers
Yellow Dock

Hope this gets you started. :)

If you are looking for a premixed tea, a tea called Smooth Move (hehe) really works. When they say, 12 hours, they mean 12 hours and you might want to be close to your bathroom. They sell this at most health food stores. Good luck with the cleanse!

When I want to do a good old fashioned "clean out," I use senna and plantain in equal parts in tea form before bed.  If I really feel stopped up, I drink the tea again in the morning.  BUT, DON"T plan anything you will need to be near your bathroom!
Have fun! ;)

I would definitely second the Yellow Dock. My mom took it when she was pregnant, and one of my sisters (who tends to be less regular than the rest of us) takes it frequently. I've also recommended it to friends and it's worked well.

The Link that Beka provided recommends Senna.

I am using Smooth Move which I found at our local organic food store.  It definitely does the job ;)  I hope your cleanse goes well.  It has certainly been an adventure for me.

Personally, I didn't use any laxative teas.  I found the Salt Water to be laxative enough.  I drank Oolong, raspberry, mint and catnip teas.

I'm on day 3 of the MC. I checked Practical Herbalism, and of the herbs they listed as laxative, I had Elderberrry. So I took a couple tablespoons of Elderberry glycerite last night. Then, I did the SWF this morning, and other than one quick trip to the bathroom, I haven't had a BM. Do I need to do something more/different?

Oh, I'm also taking the salt in capsules instead of the water...chasing the capsules down with the full 2 quarts of water...I figured this should be fine...is there something maybe I'm missing?
