spirulina and weight....

a pharmacist friend of mine and I were talking about spirulina.........her dh, also a pharmacist tells me "oh no, if you want to lose weight you shouldn't be taking it, it will make you gain weight!', so I have slacked off a bit, but wondering, is that true?

also, if it says take before a meal, is that NECESSARY? or can you take it any time?

I'm not an expert, but I believe that Spirulina would not cause you to gain weight.  (It's algae, after all.)  However, it hasn't to my knowledge been proven to cause weight loss either, but it does have the reputation for doing so.  It seems that it tends to balance GLA, provide energy and supply a vast majority of our nutritional needs, so it does make sense that it would prevent one from those "afternoon slump" snacks.  I think it all comes down to why one needs to lose weight.  If it is because of a sweet tooth or overeating, a different approach would be called for than if it were because of low activity.  Just my opinion.  I'd say google it and see what comes up.     ~L
