GFCF diet for wheat and milk allergies
« on: February 04, 2009, 02:23:25 PM »
Would the GFCF diet be a good model for someone who is only allergic to wheat and milk?  Or do you think it would be too restrictive. My daughter doesn't have a gluten intolerance, just allergic to wheat and milk.  Thanks!

I think it would be. I can't think of much that only has gluten in it. Most things have gluten have wheat. There are some grains that she would be allowed that are not on the gf menu like barley and spelt. For label reading though, GF would be an easy way to weed out wheat. Wheat is tricky and hides in places you would not expect it.

Edited: I don't know anything about milk allergies. Can she have whey?

HIO: If your daughter is only allergic to wheat, you could try a little spelt, and see what happens.  My son, who seems to be just allergic to wheat,  can handle small amounts of spelt, and it makes cookies and pie crusts way easier, and yummier!  Also, some oats (like organic) would probably be OK.  My son can eat organic oats, but not boxed stuff that contains oats, like cereal and quaker instant oatmeal.  If that makes sense.
