Did these berries kill my horse?
« on: February 16, 2012, 07:48:58 AM »
Last night my filly died of unexplained colic and I'm desperate to keep my other mare healthy.  I found a strange plant growing near her stable and I wonder if she ate it.  Does anyone know what these yellow berries are?  They weren't on a bush or tree, but more just sprouting from the ground.

I contacted a local forest expert and this was his assessment:
"Looks like Horse Nettle (Solanum carolinense) and it was likely the culprit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanum_carolinense or http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=SOCA3. "
