rough leaves both sides.  purple just above the root on the stems.  single leaf to each stem which all originate from the root.  appears to be a taproot, but broke off when i picked it.  no apparent blooms or flowers. 

pictures are of the top of leaf, bottom of leaf and bottom of stems just above the root.

I'm gonna guess it's a first year coneflower/echinacea.  Given you are in the middle of a cornfield/Iowa, I'm gonna say I'm practically positive that's what it is.
I have learned enough to know I still have lots to learn.  Teach me.

i was wondering, because i harvested a bunch of echinacea right next to it.  thanks to the city :D
