Flakes Coming Off the Ice Cubes: Causes?
« on: June 10, 2008, 06:45:14 AM »
Okay, this seems like a really silly post to me, but I can not figure out what it up with my ice.

We use a Berkey Light water filter and clean it regularly.  We use that water for drinking and for making the ice.

The drinking water is flake free, nice and clear.  The ice cubes go into the cup of water and make all sorts of nasty looking flakes.

Anyone have any idea what that's about?

What material are your ice molds made out of? Are they possibly getting old or leaching material into your ice cubes? I would possibly purchase one new ice tray and try making ice in it...

Also, could anything from the freezer be getting into your ice before it freezes?

Do you have a water softener?  We do and our ice cubes do that.  I rinse them off before using them.  I think it's the salt or our water has alot of lime too.   I wouldn't worry too much
