Hemorrhoids: Causes & Cures
« on: August 05, 2006, 04:58:02 AM »
My mother asked me yesterday what she can do about hemorrhoids. Said the cream she bought was only for temporary relief and she wants to know if there is anything natural she can do to get rid of it. I told her I would ask here. Thanks!

Aloe Vera - Use fresh and apply externally and she can use it in an enema. I would use fresh leaves gel because the stuff you buy processed is not the same. If she added a high quality lavender essential oil it would work even better.

Internally she could take Butcher's Broom or a precombined herb capsule like Varigone from Nature's Sunshine.

This is not a one time fix though. The herbs would take a few weeks to work internally. There is probably something that is causing the hemorrhoids that she needs to figure out so after she is healed from the herbs it won't come back.

This is still only for temp relief, but the main ingredient in "Tucks" medicated pads is Witch Hazel.  Witch Hazel is much cheaper than Tucks.  It's an astringent and it's provides some relief when necessary.

Straining in the bathroom is the worst thing for hemmoroids.  My Dr. prescribed lots of reading materials in the bathroom.  Takes the mind of the issue at hand and helps you to relax.  If constipation is a problem, which in most cases it is, I would also recommend some tummy tune-up and possibly diet change and candida cleanse.  If these things aren't in order, the hemorroids will come back even if the aloe heals them well.  ;)

It won't get rid of them but it sure does  make you feel a whole lot better - get a sitz bath - less than $10 from Walmart or wherever, and $1000 worth of relief ;D Also put some witch hazel in a peri bottle and "wash" with it. I feel for her!!!

My Mid-wife said red potatoes.  It works!!  Just shredded them up and place on the hemorrhoid.  If they are up inside she suggested making a suppository.  It works.  I did it.

I know a lot about this subject... :( If you want a prescription treatment that works better than any ointment, natural oils, witch hazel, sitz bath (that is if you have a case like mine) then it is called proctofoam and it actually works. I don't strain but I am very regular which brings them on as well as being pregnant and recovering continually. I rarely use any pharmeceuticals but this is the one I will not refuse when it gets very bad. fyi the oils I use are called heal hemmerhoids and I use that when I am not in desparation. I also always use a moist wipe of sorts each bm. Enough about me  :)

Okay, now I think I may have one.  :-\ I told my mother all of your suggestions, thanks a bunch.

I'm not sure I have one though, I never have before. But the past few weeks I have been having discomfort when "going" and it bleeds a little bit. Do hemorroids bleed? I really don't know anything about them other than they are uncomfortable. What are the symptoms of having one? Thanks!

Depending on how enlarged they are, you may have some bleeding, itching and irritation.  When they get large they tend to come out and can sometimes make going to the bathroom a bit more difficult as they block the rectal opening.   This can come and go depending on the state they happen to be in at the time.  The trick is to shrink them as much as possible to minimize irritation and bleeding.  Make sure your bowels are moving easily (diet) and don't strain in the bathroom (read if you need to relax).  Witch Hazel is the main ingredients in TUCKS which is a little pad used to shrink swollen hemorroids but it much cheaper to buy in a bottle.

Ok...  Let's just say I am a little curious about the red potato cure.  No particular reason... <whistling>   ;D

"My Mid-wife said red potatoes.  It works!!  Just shredded them up and place on the hemorrhoid.  If they are up inside she suggested making a suppository." :o

Are red potatoes astringent?  And, for the question of the day... exactly how does one go about making a suppository out of red potato shreds?!

My husband has been doing the water cure, sort of, but is drinking more than ever before.  Today he "informed" me that since he has been doing this he hasn't had any problems with hemorrhoids.  DRINK LOTS OF WATER, seems to be the cure for lots of problems.

Which reminds me, off thread a bit here, my son's father-in-law just spent tons of money on a specialist for problems he was having with pain in his extremities.  The answer was, drink TONS of water, up to 2 gallons a day!

I was drinking about 10 cups or more of water a day but now that I am pregnant I am drinking more. I am so thirsty and hungry all the time this pregnancy and I am guessing it is because Neveah still nurses so much. I am going to constantly be in the bathroom this pregnancy drinking all this water,  :o.

Thanks for all the good advice. I am going to try the witch hazel since I have some.

Do you just grind up the potato and put a pinch between your cheeks?

We have recently had several reports of great success using Miracle skin salve on hemorrhoids. Used over a few days it is actually quite amazing. We had one woman report that she developed hemorrhoids because of pregnancy and it was getting to the point that no longer wanted to eliminate when she needed to. Miracle provided instant soothing, reduction of swelling within hours, and used regularly over several days, immense relief, to the point that bathroom breaks were no longer dreaded. Just FYI.

OK, this subject is a bit embarassing... Most mothers get hemmoroids, right?  Well, I happen to be one of them.  I have had a bothersome hemmoroid since my 4th child's birth (over a YEAR ago).  Well, I am not one to rush off to the doctor for aches and pains, so I decided to ignore it.  Just lately I have started eating yogurt daily and have even made my own yogurt from a recipe on this site!  To my amazement, my "little friend" has disappeared!!!!!

Just coincidence or "hemmoroid yogurt therapy"???  I vote for the second.

Anyone had similar experiences?

There are periods of time where mine don't bother me at all, and I almost forget I have them. Then I will have a "flare-up" and they will bother me for a while (and it doesn't seem to matter if I'm constipated or not). I hope yours are gone for good, but you may just be going through a comfortable time.

I'm gonna have to 2nd that! I don't typically share things like this, but if anyone is in pain the way I was, I want to help!! I just gave birth and had the worst swollen hemorrhoids. I didn't know things could get that bad.... anyway... I was willing to try pretty much anything. Thank God I have such a wonderful midwife!! She brought me a fresh Aloe Vera leaf from her house along with some Lavender essential oil. I can't say the swelling went down instantly, but it was definitely a start. Within a day or two the swelling was way down to where I actually forgot that I had this problem.

So for temp relieve, I would definitely do the Aloe + Lavender...

For long term relieve and prevention I would recommend this: Plenty of water, fiber, and exercise!!! Oh, and when delivering a child, make sure to "push" the "right" way ;D ::)

God Bless and hope everyone is wonderful!! I've been away taking care of my new one, I've missed this place!! :D Glad to be back!!..... I just didn't think I'd have to start of in this category.. ::)

OK, so what about surgery for hemorrhoids? Are the remedies listed here effective for severe cases? I'm asking for someone else, BTW ;D

I don't know about "in general" but my dad had his appendix removed and supposedly when he woke up his hemroids had been "fixed" too. How does that happen I have no idea but he is(from what I can remember)is sorry.  Don't want to get too graphic but it "ain't" good.  OR hasn't been for him.   :-\

just a question? I had a bowel movement and after i saw bright red blood in the toilet. Its hard to tell how much as once it mixes with water it seems like alot. My hubby told me that it was fine and i have had minor bleeding before from an external hemorroid. Now i know i need to trust my hubby but that scared me! Everything thing i read on the internet said bleeding can be normal and if its bright red then it came form the anal canal not the colon or higher up. Of course they said i need to have any bleeding checked out. My hubby said i could go if  if i wanted to ( i don't :P)
but he felt i should see how the next bm is. He feels confident its a hemorrhoid  and nothing to worry about. If you haven't picked up on it yet i'm really struggling with TRUST right now( actually for the last 2 1/2 years ::))hahahaha Anyways has any one else experienced this. I do feel a little burny down there now, so its probably that( i hope that's what it is).Oh, yeah and my digestion always seems to be messed up so that probably encourages it( i already did TTU/Yeast Assassin earlier this year).Sorry for such a long post. My hubby is very logical and i know i need to trust him its just that i struggle sometimes. My mom's side of the family has bowel issues and i always fear getting them passed on to me. So that's part of my fear/trust issue as well. I wouldn't dare tell my mom as she would scare me to death with stories and insist something was dangerous and i should go to her doctor ( or the E.R.) right away. She really puts alot of faith in doctors and isn't in to the wait n' see side of things. so anyway i'm trying not to worry.
O.k. my second bm also had bright red blood. Whne i wipe there's maybe a smear of blood, so it only comes out with the bm. Does that seem for sure like a ruptured internal hemorrhoid ??? Wow sorry to be so graphic, this really is a disgusting topic ::) But its life and who better to share with than my WTTM friends ;D That must make ya'll feel so good to be in my network of friends  ;)

Sounds like hemorroids to me.  Um especially if your bm's are a little um on the large side and it's burning. ;)

My guess is that you are a little constipated.  Try drinking a ton of water today with some fresh lemon squeezed in it to make things a little looser.  Also probiotics (tummy tune up) helps me.

You're welcome.

I like to use the off brand of Tux to wipe when I have had them.  Regular toilet paper can be a bit scratchy and can irritate sensitive tisue and make the problem worse. ;)
I had them reallly bad right after the birth of my first.  I was in tears every time I had to go.
A friend recommended Tux.  Wow!!  What relief.  I sound like a commercial, but they really helped save my hiney. ::) :D

If you added a drop or 2 of Grapefruit seed extract/crush, would that take care of the mildew...?

Active Ingredients: Witch Hazel (50%)

Inactive Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Citrate, Diazolidinyl Urea, Citric Acid, Methylparaben, Propylparaben

I would say that GSE or Citric Acid would be preferable and maybe cheaper than the alternatives.  Plus, note, it says 50% - so you can cut it with water.

Are red potatoes astringent?  And, for the question of the day... exactly how does one go about making a suppository out of red potato shreds?!
[/quote]

I read somewhere to cut the potato into a cone shape and insert into the netherlandish area if you catch my drift.  Never tried it personally.
