When DH and I were on our honeymoon in Scotland ( :o I still can't believe we were able to go there! ;D) in 2000, we were shocked to see that the stores did not have the eggs in refrigerated cases. The had them on a shelf next in the refer. aisle so it was cool but not cold.
We sometimes buy our eggs in large quantities and when we do we keep them in what used to be the garage. It is cooler than the rest of the house but not cold. We have never had a problem and we get a months worth at a time.  HTH!

Different storage methods tested...Personally, I've always stored them unwashed in the fridge and rinse in hot water before use. Knock the loose dirt off beforehand.
