Well so far weight is staying in the 216 range all week. I am going to try a bit more high fat based off a friend who eats similar to me and she is in maintenence in the 106-108 lb range and is doing well. I'll report how it goes.

She is a marathoner and normally runs in the 10-15 mile per day range and has cut way back on running (mainly just walking now after years of daily runs) and also upped her fat content and is actually maintaining and losing. She used to do one meal a day but has been experimenting with additional meals and is a big fan of Gary Taubes and Peter Attia.

Today I wasn't hungry all day and my RM yesterday was way more carbs than I'd like to admit. Today's RM from 2-3pm:

1 lg ribeye steak
1 whole head rommaine lettuce with ranch dsg
1 slice Costco brand take and bake canadian bacon and pineapple pizza
1 large iced decaf mocha with 4 oz whole milk
 4 choc chip cookies
2 C safeway brand black walnut ice cream

My weights:

Mon 216.6 Tues 216.4 Wed 216.2

Still not in the 213-215 range I had been well over a month ago but I have noticed this is how it goes for me with seeing a new low a good month or two before it becomes my daily avg. Again I know if I cut back my portions and carbs and also upped my exercise I'd see better faster results but I cannot really complain since I am just never hungry and when I do eat I get to really eat!

I also started some threads on lowcarber and lowcarbfriends (g oooo oogle them) called One Meal A Day Club for those of us (you) who do intermittent fasting or only eat once a day which a lot of people do but not many post about it.

Weight today 215.4 lbs. Trying to get back to 213-215 consistent day to day wt. Weight for last week is up and also no change in measurments for last month. I have those 4 days off to thank for that! Not doing that EVER again. On plan for life!  Also, I am trying to up my fat and decrease carb ratio a bit based off of a friend's recommendation so I am experimenting a bit. I may go back to my usual fair but for now I am sticking to similar meals like this below of meat, salad, ice cream.

Today's RM eaten from 2-3 pm:

stir fried top sirloin with red curry sauce

Large 4 C mixed greens and rommaine lettuce salad with 4 stalks celery and 1 whole avacado and ranch dsg

Large decaf iced mocha with 4-6 ounces of half and half

1 haagen-das ice cream bar

2 choc chip cookies

Hi Makeitwork!

You are stickin' to it and doing great!  I had plans to re-start this program, but was feeling a little, "eh".  I did jump in and begin a way of eating that I saw working for some other members, and have had (for the first time in a really long time!) some excellent success.  There are low-carb aspects to it, but it is more about eating the right foods with the right foods.  In other words, I have more (a LOT more) freedom in what I can eat morning through evening.

It might inspire you - the book just hit the #1 on Amazon, and you might recognize the names from these forums/blogs.  :)  As a side note, "Gwen" from Gwen's Nest (well-known contributor here) is the one who I first saw try this, and she is the one who inspired ME to give it a whirl.  As a low-carb "guru", and a former CAD girl, you might find it SUPER interesting!

The last time I tried CAD was just sad... I did it faithfully, but was having trouble dropping weight; now, the weight is pretty well falling off me.  I am down 20.4 in 70 days, and am the smallest I have been in 4 years.

Anyway, not to discourage from CAD, but maybe to encourage you if/when you hit a plateau that feels like "forever".  ;)

Daily Wts with weekly avg, and also monthly avgs! Here you can see the slow and steady downward trend, also note the long plateaus. However eating this way really does work and although it is slow, you do not have to cut out great food or calories and you can still lose!

Ok, many things in this post: First I am at my lowest daily wt of 212.6
lbs! I am actually almost in a state of disbelief because I ate my RM
very early yesterday and almost caved and ate more carbs later in the
day. I should have known since I have been there, done that one before
that I get voracious later in the day if I eat my carbs too early but I
stuck it out and decided since I was hungry to just eat something...

So I had a small 4 oz lean steak with several stalks of celery, 2 of
which had cream cheese. I NEVER expected to be down on the scale today!
I know I drank more than enough water yesterday as well so it can't be
dehydration and has to be from the exercising.

I was even at 1950 calories BEFORE the steak, celery, and cream cheese

I know my weight will be up tomorrow since I work and on those days I
weigh at 4am and not between 8 and 10 am like my off days. Yes, those
few hours can make a big difference on the scale! LOL

Anyway I couldn't be more thrilled that I have blasted past the plateau
and I am more determined than ever to not sabotage my efforts which I
would not admit to before but looking back can see I had been. This time
I am staying on plan 100% and I am going to do some walking today only
since I have to work tomorrow and I pushed it pretty hard the last 2
days and my arms espeically are tired so I am going to take it easy.
Well, maybe ONLY one set...

This is a long post that I wrote to a gal on another CAD list but I really get into my experimenatation and how I have tweaked this WOE to work for me and get as much out of it as I can in terms of really being able to eat and not feel like I am on a diet. I have some example RM's in here of random caloric intake audits but most days I actually have more veggies than these and some of these are probably from RM days where I ate earlier than lunch time based off of The Stress Eating Cure book by the Heller's which they do not push for a balance nor veggies if you eat your carbs earlier in the day.

MIW

Pattyann you can do this and do it YOUR way. You've got to find what works and what doesn't. I've done most diets as well with the "been there done that" too and I know for me what works and what doesn't at this point. I have zero guilt when it comes to this WOL. I do not even consider it a diet. You get out of it what you put in. That is one thing I have found. I said in the beginning that I wasn't going to starve or deprive myself and I meant it. If this was something I was going to do for the rest of my life (and it is!) I need it to be realistic and satisfying.

For me that means eating at or near the caloric amount I always ate. The Heller's promised that if one followed their rules it would reduce insulin release and thus minimize hunger and cause one to burn fat instead of store it. They were right.

Now I am totally willing to admit that I can lose weight faster and have lost way more by this point if I'd have cut back on my intake but I decided for myself that I wanted to really give this a try to see if it was possible to push the limits and be able to eat high calorie foods and still lose by just confining the carbs to one hour. My weight loss has been nothing steller if you think of it in terms of "dieting" and only losing 23 pounds in 10 months. That is what I've lost. That video Patrica linked to called "Arthur's Story" the guy lost 140 pounds in the same time frame! I am drifting off course a bit but my point is that I lost 23 pounds ONLY by rearranging how I eat my foods. I really have not cut back one bit on the types of foods I have eaten! I mean that. You do not see me post many of my daily intakes and food journal because honestly I do not want to upset others who struggle with worse carb addictions or eating issues. However this week I am on track to average 213-214 which will be my new lowest weekly avg! I haven't been at this weight in 5 years! I am back in my size Large nurse scrubs for tops and bottoms. Everyone at work is really noticing the difference. They cannot believe how much I eat and see the loss for themselves. Even though I scream it from the rooftops I still think most of them think I am either lying or it is a gimmick.

I have ZERO hunger. When I actually do get hungry- I eat. The RM only thing has only happened in the last few months and I do eat a second meal on days that I am hungry for one. I truely for the most part do let my body decide.

Here have been my meals for the last few weeks and I am slowly losing on this. Some days I eat early and those do not always have veggies which according to The Stress Eating Cure book by the Heller's is ok. Now I am 38 years old, have had a fairly active lifestyle and have what I believe is a very healthy and strong body under all my excessive adipose tissue. I had the Norplant Implant (birth control) for the full five years, and smoked cigarettes from age 12 and was up to 2 packs a day by age 20 when I quit. Basically I have done some damage to my body and done things that wreak havoc with hormones and insulin resistance over the years, coupled with lots of sedintary activities with bursts of higher-level activity which obviously has not been enough to keep myself from getting fatter and fatter over the years.

I am not an emotional eater and do not have guilt feelings surrounding foods. I usually do not eat when I am upset and lose all appetite. I have really been introspective on foods and how they affect me when I eat, what I eat, etc and read The Stress Eating Cure also by the Heller's and I am more convinced than ever that they are so right on that hormones drive everything. Even how we think, emotions, hunger, feeling hot/cold, etc etc. Once those get into balance the rest falls into place. It is really as simple as that for a good percentage of weight issues. I am not saying that for some there isn't also a psychological component because I am a nurse and I have seen true anorexics and also people with pica or just plain irrational hunger so I know it does exist. But in general, for most of us just confining those carbs to a one hour period really is enough.

I have started exercising (again for the umpteeth time!) and if anything, I kick myself over not sticking with exercise for all these years. But, I am back and more determined than ever! I do think it is the boost I needed to get out of the plateau I have been in. However, I am doing no more than an hour a day and all that entails is a brisk 1 1/2 mile walk around my yard (I have 5 acres so the perimeter of the yard going around one time is a bit more than 1/4 of a mile) and that takes just about 30 minutes. Then I do 2 sets of these: 30 squats, 25 marching in place leg lifts, 20 pushups against my fence, 30 modified pull-ups, 25 pleats, 25 each leg of working inner thighs, 25 each leg of working the back of legs (basically like doing bicep curls but for your hamstrings), 25 each leg of moving the legs backwards for working the buns, 50-75 leg lifts (works abs and back), then I do at least 5 arches with my back on the floor and hold in place for spinal strengthening. I know it sounds like a lot but there is no equipment, no drive anywhere, it actually is enjoyable to do and feels good and I can go at my own pace and own ability and after 8 workouts of this I TOTALLY see results!

Here are some examples of my RM's:

2oz cheese 160
3pc bacon 135
3 eggs 210
2 C raisin bran 380
1 C whole milk 150
5 See's candy carmel

4 stalks celery 40
1 steak 270
2 C cabbage 50
1 C ice cream 300
1 C milk 150
1 C strawberries 50
1 Choc chip cookie 80
1 Choc nut caramel 105

Total: 1370

2 tortillas 380
1/2 C mozzarella chz 180
1 C chicken meat 125
1/3 C salsa 30
1/3 C sour cream 180
10 oreo cookies 400
16 oz ice caramel mocha
latte (decaf with whole milk) 330
6 C salad 100
2 TBSP ranch dsg 140

Total: 1865

1 1/2 toasted tuna fish

1 Lrg brownie 450

CM:
2 oz cheese 220
1 1/2 pepperoni stick 180

Total: 2640 (260gm carbs)

You can see some days I go under and some days over but most days are right around 1800-2000 calories. This is what I have found I can live at and still slowly lose. This is how for me I do not feel like I am deprived and I do not feel one bit like I am on a diet. I know the lists seem long but a lot of days when I do random calorie audits (and some times carb counts) I just list the ingredients but I make that stuff into omlettes, stir fry, etc. I experimented with higher fat content stuff for a couple of weeks with the Haagen-Das, ribeye, breves based off a friend who was having good results with higher fat but I was just still in a plateau and didn't care for it for long term eating.

Anyway, sorry this is so long but I just want to encourage you to not give up. I do not want anyone to take what I eat and say 100% it will work for them. I know the Heller's studied this WOE, and that Rachael Heller did extreme intermittent fasting for her 150 pound weight loss. However, they did not study ME as an individual and only I can do that! I use their diet plan and tips as a jumping off point and have slowly found what works and what doesn't for me. Prime example is the coffee. I CANNOT consume coffee, even black and even decaf outside of RM or I will not only plateau but one week after 2 black iced decaf americanos I gained 2 pounds! That was the only change. So even though I followed by the book and their plan my metabolism does not follow that rule. I had tried it with cream in under 15 minutes, I switched to consuming it with my CM's when I ate a breakfast CM and still under 15 minutes and same thing.

FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU!!!!

Most likely will be a one meal only (RM only) day. Started off with my exercise regimen again. 30 minute brisk 1 1/2 mile walk, plus 1 circuit of leg work like squats, deep sqauts, pleats, inner thigh work, lots of bun exercises, 50 leg lifts (ab work) pushups and pullups, and my back exercises. I did all the same stuff yesterday as well. Maybe 45 minutes total work out.

Today's weight 213.2 lbs. Same as yesterday.

RM from 11:40-12:40-

1 large ribeye steak
6 C mixed baby herb and green salad with 3 large mushrooms
4 TBSP blue cheese dressing
2 stalks of celery and 3 mini bell peppers stuffed with cream cheese, diced turkey breast, diced green onions, shredded cheddar cheese, and some hot pepper flakes
Iced caramel mocha with 3 oz of syrups, 1 C whole milk, 5 shots decaf esspresso (although this was shared with my daughter so I didn't get it all  )
1 regular sized snickers
1 regular sized kit kat
1 reese's PB cup (1/2 of a regular package package)

I do have some BBQ chicken legs in the fridge and a big bowl of the stuffed peppers. Should I get hungry later I will have some of that for a CM but since I am at home today and in my "normal" routine I usually do RM only those days.

Today I didn't exercise since I spent 1 1/2 hours weeding and hauled 3 loads of
weeds to the other side of my land which is 1/4 mile round trip so I got a 3/4
mile walk in plus all the upper body weed pulling. We grow monster weeds out in
the country! LOL We also planted 24 mums in my flower beds as well. Then I came
right in and started cleaning. This evening will be round 2 getting the other
half of the house, the kid's play room and laundry done. Ugh... the joys of
running a big house. We don't do near the amount of yard work we need to,
especially since Hubby started building his shop. I am hoping once that is done
we can do more out in the yard because it needs it!

Tomorrow I've got some rabbits to deliver then will take it easy but plan on
doing my "usual" exercise routine.

Today's RM from 12:30-1:30:

1 very large ribeye
6 C salad with 3 stalks celery, 3 diced mushrooms, 3 diced green onions
4 TBSP blue cheese salad dressing
3 stuffed minibellpeppers (cream cheese, diced turkey breast, diced green
onions)
1 large iced mocha with 3 oz syrups, 5 shots decaf esspresso, 1 C whole milk
1 regular sized almond joy
1 regular sized snickers
1 regular sized kit kat
1 regular sized twix

Don't know why but I wanted chocolate today! Must be getting close to TOM or
something. Today my weight was up from 213.2 lbs to 214. Not sure how tomorrow
will be after such a large RM with all the junk carbs but I was sweating buckets
and buckets during all that weed pulling and I could feel my muscles shivering
after that and I was HUNGRY!!

Folks I am still here. Hanging out in the 213-214 lb range. I have gone back to doing the RM early early early to see if I can lose weight faster. We'll see!

It is 4am and I am 213.2 lbs. This weigh in is about 3-4 hours earlier than my "usual" weigh in time because I have to go to work today. This is the 3rd day this week where I am in the 213's and I looked back on my averages and this is the FIRST time I have had 3 days! (I've had 3 other weeks where I was in the 213's twice in the same week. Hoping this will be a new low and a new downward trend!

I haven't even been exercising the last 2 weeks due to just plain being either too busy or too tired. I am going to try to eat early on my way into work today and will have a CM snack/lunch later today around 11am or noon.

Ok everyone, today is MAJOR bragging rights day for me.

Today I am 211.8 lbs. That is my lowest weight in over 7 years. I also rechecked my measurements and lost another 1/2 inch off my waist and hips and 1/4 inch off my thighs.

The last time I weighed this much was my first year on the dog sledding trails in Canada. I have done WW, Zone, JC, juicing, whole foods, the pH diet (eating more alkaline foods) all in that time frame and the lowest I got with that was 213-217. I can say I finally busted through that several month long plateau. I kind of figured my body had that weight range as a "set point" because that had been my lowest weight in the last few years. I expect to see "set points" at 200, 195, and 180 because those are other milestone weights I had got to in the last 15 years and was able to stay at for over a year or more and I do think the body has a memory on those things.

I have recently switched my RM early morning. I still do one meal only most days, and try to have a CM snack (if I need it) before 3pm. This is based off of The Big Breakfast Diet that the Heller's recommended in their The Stress Eating Cure book. However, I still follow CAD/CALP rules and stick to one hour, "aim" for balance. I do eat my entire day's calories (usually) in my one RM, so we are talking 1800-2600 calories most days with 100-300gms carbs. I do not think of myself as a binge eater but I do know this is MUCH different than how I ate for my entire life leading up to this point and probably way more food in one sitting than a lot of other folks. But, I want to share my success at doing HIGH CALORIE eating because that is what I set out to prove if it could be done or not and I can see that it CAN be done!

Ok everyone, here is my "almost" entire year's worth of daily, weekly, AND monthly averages. You can see I am losing only a bit more than a 1/4 of a pound a week the last few months on average but no matter how you analyze my averages, my weight is going down down down ever so slowly. I keep getting encouragement from a gal I know only via emails who has done one meal a day for years now that there will be way less saggy skin this way so I am happy about that. Plus I truely do not feel like I am on a diet! The one month where I actually saw a gain was during the vacation where I took 4 days off so that kind of messed with things and those 4 days took my body 16 to get back on track so I won't ever make that mistake again!!! That even includes me NOT recording those daily wts until I got back into the same zone I was in when I left so mega-yikes...

So today I am at my LOWEST weekly avg in the last year AND was on TOM last 2 weeks so how did that happen??? And and and I am not lying when I say I am eating 1800-2600 calories a day and 100-300gms of carbs. We are talking full fat steak, dairy, regular sugar, etc etc. I have large 24 ounce fruit smoothies and ice cream coffee milkshakes EVERDAY to make sure I am getting ENOUGH calories in! I love high calorie weight loss and am starting to think people who were binging or carb overloading during their RM's on this diet never stuck with it long enough to see they could still do that AND lose weight. It is very very slow I will admit but I am living proof the weight is coming off slowly and I eat what I eat day in and day out. I do not starve all week and then do a cheat day. Nothing like that at all.  I even cannot believe that I have had the success I had eating regular calories and regular food that I have always eaten. Just doing it in a one hour time frame with the same amounts of calories AND carbs and losing weight. Plus it is keeping me full all day and not triggering hunger! CAD really does work. Even a couple of days a week I might get hungrier later in the day and I will have a small CM of cheese, meat, or maybe some low carb veggies and I am still losing weight adding those calories in to my alreayd high calorie amount from the RM that day.

Ok my LOWEST weekly avg yet and also TOM????? Wow I am a believer!!! Thanks Oriana

This is from Enomarb on the Hour Power #5  CAD/CALP thread that we are on. She has been doing CALP for 10+ years and I asked her to post again about how she actually kept slowly losing weight and had to start eating MORE carbs to maintain!

hi-
 MiW, here is the story.
Once I started CALP I felt so good that the weight loss was like an bonus!
SO I lost from 180 (or 185- not sure!)- to 150 by 12/03, so within 5 months. Then I stopped losing. Just kept chugging on CALP- eating the same- because I felt so good. Didn't think of it as a stall - just figured that was that. I found this site in December 2003 and posted the 150 as GOAL as I didn't ever have a goal. Then that spring started losing again. When I hit 125 I decided that I wanted to be able to maintain, so I started increasing my carbs at RM to slow and then stop my weight loss.
 That's the story-

Ok all, I officially ended ONE YEAR following CAD/CALP and combo with intermittent fasting. Once I met other people doing Rachael Heller's original way to lose weight by eating only one meal a day I slowly evolved my own eating patterns to that. I make sure to keep to the one hour rule. I am up to about 5 days a week with truely only one meal a day. The other 2, maybe 3 days I do end up having a CM if I need it. I do not force myself to eat the one meal a day. It is my natural hunger that guides me. The days I do get hungry again I will go ahead and have the CM. I also the last 3 months have switched to eating my RM in the morning and try to have it in by 9am according to The Big Breakfast Diet which was heavily cited by the Heller's in their book The Stress Eating Cure.

So now I am doing a combo of CAD/CALP, BBD, SEC, and IF- WOW!!! My personal eating plan is a one hour, total day's supply of calories, at least 7 ounces of protein, and consumed by 9am, balanced of protein/fat, veggies/fruits, and carbs (or at least my ratio that I found I can lose well on). Sounds complicated but is very easy and doeable. I sleep well with no full belly, have seen better results as well with ring being loser, just "appearing" thinner even though weight loss is still slow with a monthly avg of about 1/4 to 1/2 pound a week eating like this.

I did start out following CALP as written. I still avoid MSG, anything SF/AS in it, caffeine (even decaf) outside of my RM hour. I have experimented A LOT in the last year with RM for dinner, RM for lunch, then RM for breakfast. I follow many of the CALP "options" and even tried the GTF chromium for 2 months then went off and did not track any noticeable slow down in weight loss. I try to eat lots of cheese and fresh ground black pepper for natural sources of GTF chromium as the Heller's explained. I "aim" for balance at RM's with the 1/3 protein/fat, 1/3 low carb veggies, 1/3 carbs of my choice. However, along my journey in the last year I discovered I can still eat 1 part protein/fat to 2 parts low carb veggies and 2 parts carbs and still lose!

I probably was only eating about 1300-1500 calories a day the first couple of months but slowly started learning more about intermittent fasting and high calorie weight loss and actually increased my caloric intake but followed "the rules" of CAD and do intermittent fasting enough days of the week that it actually makes me less hungry and able to tolerate the amount of calories I currently eat and still see results.

I eat most days anywhere from 1800-2300 calories. 100-300 gms of carbs. A typical meal consists of this:

1 Large Ribeye Stead

24 ounce Blender Bottle fruit smoothie made from 1 banana, one orange, 1/2 a large apple, 1 Cup each of green grapes, red grapes, and strawberries. 1 Cup of full fat yogurt. I use "Cream Top" by Brown Cow which is 9gms of fat per serving.

12-16 ounces of an ice cream milkshake made with 2-3 cups of regular fat/sugar ice cream, 1/2 to 1 cup of regular half & half, and a Star Buck's Via thrown in for coffee flavoring.

5 chocolate chip cookies

Some days also add a 4 to 6 cup salad of mixed baby greens and 4 TBSP of regular Hidden Valley Ranch.

It may seem over the top to eat all that in one meal but I found I is doable, I do not feel stuffed like I am after a typical Thanksgiving meal. The full feeling last ALL DAY long and I am getting awesome tastey foods day in and day out!

My personal opinion on this WOE, sprinkled with hours of research on insulin resistance, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, syndrome X, hyperinsulinemia is that it isn't so much about the calories but is about minimizing insuin surges the rest of the day. Also about surpressing some of the other hormones like cortisol while raising and maintaing seratonin. There are suggestions by the Heller's and Dr. Jacobowitz in the BBD book and SEC book so I slowly encorporated those.

I only want to share my story of the past year and what has worked for me. I have only been off plan a total of 10 days (or less) in the last year. I learned that it took me 17 days to take off the weight from 4 days off plan! I learned that it can take 2 days for the result of a cheat day to show up on the scale. My point is that being off plan can serve a purpose too in the scientific method of learning about my own personal metabolism.

Today I am 210.6 lbs!!! I am in the 210's everyone  :D This really works just keep trucking along and don't give up. My weekly avg for the last year is just about 1/4 to 1/2 pound per week loss. That is a great rate to lose! Less saggy skin and stress on the body.

I like the butter analogy. I have lost 97.6 sticks of butter already! Technically I am down 24.6 pounds so I am almost to the 25 pounds for the thread title LOL

Hi! I'm SeaLady and just " refound" this thread. I started reading from the beginning and felt like I was starting to know each one of you. I read so many posts that I started to feel almost dizzy, so I skipped ahead to the last page....and it looks like almost everyone is gone.....except Makeitwork! I really am cheering you along MIW! I truly hope you stick it out because your posts have been inspiring to me. I started CAD last week when I stayed home from work with a bad cold. I still had my appetite but my" taster" was a little off. This was the time to go on my favorite weight loss program, I thought to myself. I have done CAD in the past and lost weight.  But then stupidly fell off the wagon and regained the weight. I had 40 pounds to lose and I think about 4 have come off this week. So 36 pounds to go! I really hope the other posters return to this thread! We can all help each other! MIW, if you are reading this I want you to know that you have a weight losing buddy in me if that will help! We can offer tips and share strategies to tweak to lose more.I have a few ideas to share that may help someone to lose faster. I also look forward to hearing from others!

Let's not let this thread die! :-[ Let's all lose weight doing CAD!

SeaLady  :)
