: URGENT!!! Can babies use bentonite clay?
: Libbyleigh April 05, 2013, 07:45:46 AM
Hello all! I have a very urgent question about whether babies can bathe in bentonite clay, to draw lead from their system. A friend of mine has some missionary friends in China, who are coming back to the US soon. The problem is that the Chinese government will not let their 1 year old out of the country because of high levels of lead in her system. I mentioned bentonite clay, and was asked to research it because they need to know right away! Any thoughts or tips would be excellent and very much appreciated!!!

My opinion, bentonite would be fine for baby to bathe in and even ingest in small quantities IF baby gets plenty of fluids and doesn't get constipated. I would also use activated charcoal. This is what I would do it in that situation.

I would not advise bentonite clay or charcoal internally for a one year old as a home treatment. The risk of blockage and electrolyte depletion is high. I might do clay baths, but with alot of thought.

Typically treatment for lead poisoning consists of cleaning up exposure (where did the baby get lead? water? breastmilk? environmental?) and possibly some nutritional support and time for the baby's body to slowly detox out the lead. Chelation is sometimes used, but it is not really something to try at home in an infant or toddler.

By "cleaning up exposure" do you mean, removing whatever gave the baby the lead? And how long would it take for her body to 'slowly' detox? Also, what would make bentonite clay not good for a baby? (I'm assuming it's not the best, since you said it needs to be given with alot of thought" Thanks for the replies!

Yes, I meant the first step is to figure out where the lead exposure is coming from, as levels will start dropping as soon as new exposure stops happening.
How fast it detoxes out depends on the original levels, and how well the baby's body is functioning.

Why bentonite clay internally is not the best for infants and toddlers.......all the risks are so much higher for them than for adults/fully developed bodies. I'm sorry I don't have time to go into detail now.
