Pardon my naivete, but I can't figure out how to start a new thread.

Before you start a new thread, make sure that there is not already a thread posted on your topic of interest.  Read this thread for more information.

How do I know if someone already asked the same question?

From the home discussion page, look to your left and click on the board/topic that most fits the question you have.  If you put it in the wrong place, don't fret, one of the moderators will be happy to move it for you.

From inside the topic/board, look again to your left and you should see "Start New Topic".  Click on this and the editing board should open for you to start your new thread.

When choosing a title for your topic, please include your question or subject matter in the Subject line.  These are all good examples:  Avoiding the Stomach Flu, Herbal Remedies to Boost a Tired Out Adrenal Gland, Broken Bones:  Natural Healing & Pain Relief, Thrush:  Causes & Cures, and Yeast Assassin & Tummy Tuneup:  Dosage & Duration.

Please do not use titles like:  Help, I Have a Question, Please Read This or How do I know if....

Any topic that you have created, you may also modify or remove.  If you look below your entry once you have posted it, you should see these options "Reply", "Reply with quote", "Modify" and "Remove".  If you are having difficulties, the moderators will be glad to help.  Wink

I just noticed today that many of the merge announcements I posted had broken links.  I have fixed these.

Next, I'd like to mention that out of all of the new topics I reviewed today, more than half of them were duplicates and could have easily been found using the search functions in the forums.

If you have never read the following threads in their entirety, please take a few minutes to do so. They will provide you with help, hints and information that will make your searching, reading & navigating through the forum much more efficient.  It also does me a great service for you to be thoroughly educated in such ways as it cuts down on the amount of time, I have to review needless duplicates and allows me more time for thorough research and replies to questions.

How do I know if someone already asked the same question?

Rules of the road... er, forum.

If you are just new here and need some tips to get you started, you should also check out this thread.

On the same note, I'd like to request that you take a moment to look at the folder you are currently in before you create a new topic.  Gabe has gone to great lengths to create many folders to help you to categorize and locate threads more easily.

EXAMPLES:

Homemade Icecream
:  Might be appropriate in either the Milk Products folder or the Desserts folder.  My thoughts on this one was that Ice Cream would be considered a milk product and the Desserts folder would be better to catch anything sweet that wouldn't otherwise fit in another folder.  This is definitely one of those times where it would be a judgement call.

Taking Herbs While Pregnant:  I would put this in the Pregnancy folder.

Giving Vitamin C to children:  There is a Children's Health folder and this wouldn't necessarily be wrong, but this folder is more of a "catch all" for any topics related to kids' health that wouldn't fit elsewhere.  I would put this topic in the Vitamins & Supplements folder.

Having Achy Joints While Nursing:  Although nursing is in the title of this thread, nursing is not the most important factor (and might not even be a factor at all).  To me a topic that would be focused on the milk supply or the responses of the baby to nursing would be appropriate in the Nursing folder, but our topic above would be more at home in the Muscle, Joint Pain & Headaches folder.

These are just a couple of examples to help you decide.

I know that sometimes, it's a bit difficult to decide which folder to put something in, but I ask, that you at least make an attempt at it (don't put a topic called "Foot Fungus & Itching" in the Fruits and Vegetables folder  Grin ) and if something seems better categorized elsewhere, it can be moved.

Thanks

Hmmm... I thought about putting "Boston [Ice]Cream Pie" in the Desert folder, but I put it in Chat & Whatever because, I reasoned, this is a health-related website and the post was not health-related. If it had been a healthy desert, or a post about how to change it to a healthy desert, I wouldn't have had any problem deciding that it belonged in the Desert folder. And now I see you moved it to the Desert folder. So I guess I am one of those folks who will continue to have trouble figuring out where things ought to go.  Undecided

I have a question.  I was reading on a thread the other night and started to reply and it gave me a warning because the particular thread was 120 days old.  I hadn't paid attention to the dates when I was reading.  Should I reply anyways or start a new thread???  Didn't know what to do So I didn't do anything.... Thanks

Got a question. If there is a section on the Children's Health board for Training and Development, then why are all the child training questions moved to 7xSunday? Just been curious about that for a while and thought I'd ask.
Thanks,

This folder is for things, like potty training, speech therapy, diet related development and growth, etc.  The questions I move are more related to discipline oriented training and are more related to parenting than health.  Although they are not entirely separate subjects, some are more prone to debate and difference of opinions and parenting styles and are more appropriate in the other forum.

I hope that makes sense.   Roll Eyes

Thanks HB for all your hard work in organizing this all. Last night I did a search for camping, camping with kids, camping kids etc. I went through all the results and it did not turn up anything pertaining to what I was looking for. Weird. I even tried different variations. Maybe because there was a backwards slash, it didn't appear. So I started a new topic. This morning, I did a search the same way again and the traveling/camping thread appeared as third on the results list. Sorry about giving you extra work... Smiley I'm not sure why I didn't see it in the search results last night but saw it today...

We allow the members some lattitude in topics unrelated to health.  This is a community and we encourage you to "commune".  If the topics are obvious duplicates of something in one of the other two forums they may be moved.  If they violate the rules, they will be moved or deleted.

So, to answer your question, yes these topics are appropriate, allowed & encouraged.   Grin

I was wondering the same thing. Also, I have some pics of herbs I know but wanted to post without the ID's to see if anyone would recognize them and wanted to know if that would be alright.

Maybe this isn't the right place but thought it might work.    If we are receiving notification of posts on welltellme and you move a topic to one of the other sites will we still get the notifications or must we go to that site and request notification?

I was looking for avocado recipes.... I typed avacodo (several tries with different variations) into the search box and came up with some results... but no recipes. Then I realized that I had spelled it wrong.... or is there more than one spelling Huh becuase both spellings were used on the forum (avacodo & avocado).  I finally checked the fruits and vegetables board and got recipes... but I almost was guilty (again) of starting a new repetitive thread Lips Sealed.
I am realizing I need to check the different applicable boards for threads even when my searches came up duds.

If a topic is moved, the URL/address will remain the same.

If a topic is split or merged the URL/address will change.

If the address is changed, then you will have to request new notification, else it will remain the same.

I attempt to correct spelling errors as I find them to prevent this from happening.  Feel free to let me know if you find a misspelling in a topic/thread title/header.

Also, to help me find something that I'm not sure how to spell, I often google the word first and verify my spelling and then search.  If I'm sure there is an additional/optional or common misspelling, I will often try that as well.

All I ask is that you do your best.  Look for things, read existing posts, threads, questions and then if you're "guilty" of breaking protocol, no harm done.  I'm here to fix it.  That's my job.  Wink
