How many calories in a glass of Kefir?
« on: September 20, 2007, 12:11:14 PM »
HI!  :) This may be weird, but I'm using Kefir as a diet... now my only problem is.... I don't know how many calories kefir has. Does anyone? How do I go about figuring it out?  ??? Any help will be appreciated! Thanks! ;D

I second that, and if anyone knows how much protein is in say 8oz would be great too! ;)

Serving size is one cup(8 oz)

calories 120
total fat 2 g
sat fat 1.5g
cholesterol 10 mg
sodium 125mg
carbohydrate 12g
sugars 8g
protein 14g

Are you making your own and straining out the grains?  If so, wouldn't the kefir have the same calories as the milk you used them in?  I wouldn't think that the fermenting would add calories.  Of course, this is just off the top of my head,so I could be wrong! :)

It should have less calories because the kefir eats the sugar in the milk and produces lactic acid.

;) That's exactley what I was thinking! That is why I am not sure how many calories it would have. Since the sugar is gone, isn't it a LOT less??? ??? I'm trying to make myself feel better about my diet!  ::)  ;D

Well, technically the sugar might be gone.  But you do add a bunch of honey into the kefir before you drink it. ::)  ;) I think by adding honey to it you actually put in more sugar then the original milk had.  That leads me to conclude the kefir you drink with honey actually has more calories than the glass of milk you originally started out with. :)

Yes, I do add honey & other things to the kefir. That's not the problem.  I want to know how many calories just the plain kefir has, so I know what to start with. As a base. After that, I can add the other calories of what I'm adding... be it honey or fruit or whatever.  ;)

I found this site on
the nutritional & chemical composition of kefir prepared with whole pasteurized cow's milk:
http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefir-composition.htm

At this site: http://onibasu.com/archives/km/2737.html
The following is listed for kefir made with 2% milk:
Quote
Calories: 244.4
Calories from Fat: 81.1
Total Fat: 9.0 g
Percent Fat: 33.2 %
Saturated Fat: 5.8 g
Cholesterol: 20.0 mg
Sodium: 100.2 mg
Total Carbohydrate: 18.0 g
Dietary Fiber: 0.0 g
Protein: 18.0 g
Vitamin A: 32.1 %
Vitamin C: 0.0 %
Calcium: 70.1 %
Iron: 6.0 %
[/size]

This site:
http://www.goodeatsfanpage.com/CollectedInfo/MilkInformation.htm
Lists kefir (doesn't say what type milk) as having the following per 8 oz. serving:
210 calories
9.8 g fat
321 mg calcium

So, I guess to be on the safe side, I would count an unsweetened, 8 oz serving of raw, whole milk kefir as having at least 250 calories.  :-\

This website says 160 calories in a cup (227 g) (lowfat milk).
http://www.truestarhealth.com/Notes/1798007.html

This site says 90 calories in 175g (this site, the milk is not listed, but the fat grams are 3.5 per serving, so I would guess this is also lowfat milk).
http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/84981.html

Lifeway says 120 calories per cup (lowfat & nonfat milk)
http://www.lifeway.net/product/kefir_lowfat.php

These three seem to be in accordance with one another, so my guess is their variance probably depends on the fat content and the sources listed with 200+ calories are most likely sweetened.

I think a LOT depends on the brand you purchase. I like to round up my figures to be on the safe side. I'd rather think I was consuming 250 calories and actually be only consuming 210 than the reverse.  ???

I'm looking at Helios brand made from "fat reduced" milk and it concurs with the lower caloric count of 120 calories per 8 oz serving.

That's why I'd go with the higher calorie count for homemade from raw, whole milk. This is without the addition of sweeteners like honey, fruit, etc.

The difference I'm seeing in the calorie count seems to be stemming from the fat content of the milk -- whether or not it is whole milk.

I think you may have hit the bullseye there.  It appears that 3.5 grams of fat contains 32 calories.  Didn't know the fat to calorie ratio was so high.  ;D

:o  :o Wow!!! I thought I was on a good diet! SO MANY CALORIES!
?! ??? :o I shocked! And a bit dissappointed! So if I drink 16 oz for breakfast & another 16 oz for lunch, am I consuming like 500 calories per meal? That's insane! :o Ok, now I'll have to re-analyze my diet plan...... thanks ladies for getting me the info...  :)

Ok. Here's the thing ladies. I don't know where those websites got there info, but it doesn't make sense to me. If my milk started out having 150 calores per 8oz, how in the world does it end up with more? Especially since the sugar is being eaten. Doesn't make sense.  ???

the gals on the fasting with kefir are losing weight, you might check into that.  you do get to eat soup too.
